5 Questions You Need to Ask Before You Migrate SAP to Microsoft Azure

Moving your SAP systems to the public cloud can increase your agility while reducing your costs. Here’s why global enterprises trust Microsoft Azure with their most valuable SAP data.

More enterprises are migrating their data to the public cloud.

According to the latest RightScale State of the Cloud Report, 66 percent of enterprises will increase their public cloud spend by at least 20 percent this year.

The public cloud offers benefits that you can’t achieve with traditional IT services. For example, you can rent compute, network, and storage resources on an as-needed basis without making a long-term financial investment. This allows you to scale your services in near-real time so that you can meet business demands and gain a competitive edge.

  • Azure has a high capacity for SAP compute. It offers 24TB for online transaction processing (OLTP) to support S/4 HANA. It also offers 60TB for online analytical processing (OLAP).

1. What are your cloud goals?

Although you are migrating your SAP systems to the cloud, you should step back and consider your overall cloud strategy. What results do you want to achieve with the cloud? How will migrating your SAP systems to the cloud help you achieve these goals?

Also think about your non-SAP environment. For example, your migration may impact any on-premises systems that connect to SAP. To ensure that everything works seamlessly, you may need to move these systems to the cloud at the same time.

Also understand that you can’t just “lift and shift” applications to the cloud to achieve cost savings. If you try to run your Azure environment the same way you run your legacy environment, you will increase your costs and complexity.
